The gang rape of a 15-year-old Mumbai girl by her friend and three of his friends came to light on 25 November, after the victim's aunt received a video clip of the act on popular messaging app - WhatsApp.

According to media reports, the rape accused had used the same clip to threaten the victim into silence. However, they later shared it with their friends on WhatsApp, following which the video went viral, eventually reaching the girl's aunt.

When did the incident take place?

The sordid crime had taken place on 8 November, when the victim's friend had called her to his friend's house saying he needed help with studies.

After the girl had gone to the house, the four boys present there took turns raping her and recorded the entire incident on their mobile phones. According to the police, all the accused are between 15 and 16 years of age.

The accused threatened the victim that they would make the clip public if she revealed her ordeal to anyone. After the rape, one of the accused shared the video on WhatsApp, after which it went viral.

On 25 November, the victim's aunt was shocked to receive the same clip. She showed the clip to the girl, who broke down and narrated the ordeal to her.

The victim's aunt immediately rushed to the Malad police station and registered an FIR. Following the complaint, the police immediately launched a probe and nabbed all the accused.

The four accused have been booked under Section 376 (G) (gang rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.

After the arrest, all the accused were produced before a juvenile court, after which they were sent to the Dongri correction home.
