India completed its first Test series win away from home after 4 years, after beating Sri Lanka by 117 runs in the 3rd Test match in Colombo on Tuesday, 1 September. The win means India has recorded a 2-1 series victory in the island nation, the first time in 22 years.
Sri Lanka made a late come back in the final day of the Test, after being 5 wickets down at one point with 78 overs to come. Captain Angelo Mathews and debutant Kusal Perera strung together a partnership of 135 runs, and took Sri Lanka to 242/5, by which stage an improbable win looked to be on the cards for Lanka.
However, Perera's dismissal opened the floodgates for Indian bowlers, as the latter quickly picked up the remaining wickets to wrap up the match in India's favour. Cheteshwar Pujara was awarded the Man of the Match award for his outstanding batting performance.
The win also marked the first occasion India won a Test series after trailing at one point. Ishant Sharma, courtesy of his 8-wicket haul over the two innings, entered the 200-wicket club in Test cricket, becoming the fastest ever to do so (65 matches).
Skipper Virat Kohli (26 years and 300 days), meanwhile, has become the youngest Indian captain to win an away Test series, eclipsing the record set by Tiget Pataudi, who was 27 during India's 1968 series victory in New Zealand.
