Turkey deports two Tamil Nadu men for joining ISIS

Two young men from Chennai and Karur were deported from Turkey when their attempts to get in touch with ISIS in Syria came under the scanner. Both of them have been released but are under the surveillance of the Indian Intelligence agencies.

While one is a 23-year-old B.com graduate from Royapettha in Chennai, the other is a 22-year-old high school dropout from Karur.

The young man from Chennai came across a person online who adviced him to apply for a tourist visa for Dubai, Turkey and Malaysia to avoid suspicion. The Chennai youth lured the Karur native about the job opportunities in Syria, and finally convinced him to come along.

After staying in Dubai for a few days, they moved to Turkey and stayed there in a small lodge. They come under suspicion when they were making enquiries about crossing the border to Syria.

During the investigation, Turkish officers found their statements erratic and after finding enough evidence, they deported them to India. They also sent a detailed preliminary inquiry report.

As soon as they landed India, they were interviewed by Centre and state officials, where they told the police that they believed that by joining ISIS they "were going to rule the world" as reported by the TOI.

A TN intelligence officer reportedly said, "We let them go with their families, but they will remain under our close surveillance."

This is not the first time that the Turkish government has deported Indians on the suspicion of joining ISIS. In January, nine people were deported by the Turkish government on same grounds.
