An elderly 78-year-old man allegedly murdered his specially abled sone here on Saturday over his apparent refusal to wear face mask amid coronavirus lockdown, said the police.

Banshidhar Mallick, a resident oof North Kolkata’s Shovabazar, went to the Shyampukur Police Station at around 7 pm and claimed that he had murdered his son by strangling him with an outfit strap.

The elderly man claimed that he committed the crime at around 5:30 pm after his son refused to wear a mask while stepping out of the house.

The septuagenarian claimed that his son had been going outside every evening without wearing a face mask, regardless of being told repeatedly to put it on as per the lockdown norms.

The verbal spat between the father and son soon turned serious on Saturday and the old man claimed that he lost his temper and throttled his son to death.

The officer incharge of the police station, along with officers, went to the old man’s house and found his 45-year-old son, Shirsendu Mallick, lying dead. The body has been sent to the hospital for autopsy.

Officers from the city police’s detective department also arrived at the spot and conducted initial investigation.

Mallick has been taken into custody and a case of murder had been initiated, said Joint Commissioner of Police Murlidhar Sharma.

"As far as the motive is concerned, the matter is under investigation," Sharma said.
