A man in Chennai has been arrested after he allegedly set his mother on fire after a fight.
D Amarnath Prasad, a cab driver by profession, tied his mother Sasikala to a chair and set her ablaze, the Hindustan Times quoted police as saying.
The daily reported that neighbours had heard a fight between the two - allegedly over Sasikala's inability to find Prasad a bride - and had alerted the police. The mother-son duo were staying in a thatched hut on the terrace of an apartment block.
"Sasikala was found strapped to a chair and covered in burns," HT quoted the police as saying. "She was taken to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. She died after suffering 70 per cent burn wounds," added the police.
Neighbours have alleged that Prasad was an alcoholic who would often quarrel with his mother. His eldest brother had died a few years ago while another brother resides in another part of Chennai.
Investigation is on in the matter.
