Prakash Jha, the man behind films like Gangaajal, Raajneeti and Apaharan, announced the sequel to Gangaajal, called Jai Gangaajal. Starring Priyanka Chopra, the film will be released on 4 March, 2016. Like the first part, the sequel too will portray the protagonist as someone who takes on the corrupt political officials at Bankipur.

Priyanka Chopra took to twitter to unveil her first look in the film and also announced the release date on a social networking platform.

About her character in Jai Gangaajal, she told Bombay Times,

"I play Abha Mathur, a police officer who is ignored as she does not use any political pull. So she is sent to the district of Bankipur with a brief to not disturb the established clique between the local businessmen, politicians and the police. She is told how it is a golden posting where all she has to do is sit on a chair and have people salaam her. But when she gets there, she has to fight not just the menace of the district, but also the functioning of her own force, which is completely mired in corruption. She turns the tables against the existing system and becomes a problem. She also cannot be transferred again due to upcoming elections. The sequel thus deals with the current dictum faced by the police, 'Efficiency is crime, and Inaction is virtue'. Today, if a cop arrests someone, he has to not only be answerable to his bosses, but to the legislature, human right activists, journalists and if he is saved from the rest, then even to the judiciary, who may take him to task for his actions. My character fights this mentality in the film. And even though that creates problems for her, she fights it out."

The film was initially titled Gangaajal 2, however due to copyright issues, Prakash Jha changed the title to Jai Gangaajal. The film is a sequel to the 2003 super-hit Gangaajal starring Ajay Devgn.
