Ki and Ka: 6 things Arjun Kapoor said about Kareena Kapoor, cooking and gender equality

His last big screen outing was Tevar in January 2015. However, actor Arjun Kapoor remained in the public eye, choosing to take his infectious energy to the small screen, with the adventure reality TV show, Khatron Ke Khiladi: Kabhi Keeda Kabhi Peeda.

Arjun is back with a new film, the R Balki directorial, Ki and Ka, which stars Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead. The film sees Arjun essaying the character of a househusband who challenges the stereotypes associated with an Indian marriage.

During the launch of the trailer in Mumbai, the actor spoke on a number of topics, including his recently-acquired culinary skills and his chemistry with Kareena. He also shared some insight on gender stereotypes. Excerpts:

On how much he identifies with Ki and Ka

The director is 'Bal-KI' and the actress is 'KA-reena'. I am just the 'AND' in between Ki and Ka.

On the cooking scenes in the film

I know very little cooking as I entered the kitchen for the first time for the film. I have grown up in the lap of luxury and have had people taking care of me and catering to my needs for as long as I can remember.

On housewives

I never really understood how much effort it takes to be selfless like a housewife. And we take them for granted! They don't just sit at home, they make the home. A woman sacrifices a lot of her own needs, desires and ambitions to fulfill and nurture her man.

On the concept of masculinity

Everybody in our country associates masculinity with what's below a man's navel.

To be able to be a true man is to be able to take care of your loved one in any capacity. It has nothing to do with money. The notion of being a man is very stereotypical in our country and it needs to change.

On romancing Kareena Kapoor Khan

When R Balki told me he wants to cast Kareena (Kapoor) in the film, I was excited as an actor because she is going to come onboard with the intention of doing right for the film. Kareena is a selfish actor. She was very patient with me and did not carry the baggage of being a star. She allowed me to have fun as an actor.

On whether a film about gender equality will reflect any change in the society

People always expect films to change the society. But films merely reflect society. It is more important to bring awareness and start the conversation. These conversations currently happen in very hushed tones. Why is it considered a taboo? Why can't we make these conversations casual? I know a lot of men who are not as ambitious as what society expects a man to be.
