Panama Papers leak case: India's rich and famous named in the list

The Panama Papers are back in the headlines in India after the probe agency quizzed Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Monday.

Among the a-lister Indians named in the global list are billionaire property tycoon Kushal Pal Singh, Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Adani, and real estate mogul Sameer Gehlaut.


The list also include Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and his daughter-in-law, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan appeared before the ED on Monday for questioning in connection with Panama Papers leak case. Aishwarya, participated in the investigation in the national capital after evading two summons.

Since the leaks of the Panama Papers in 2016, the probe agency has been investigating the matter. It later served notices to the Bachchan family members, asking them to elucidate their alleged unlawful foreign agreements since 2004, under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme of the RBI.

Here's a list of Indians whose names have come up in the investigations:

AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN:

The leaked papers allege that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was a director at Amic Partners Limited, a firm based in the British Virgin Islands, before her status was altered to that of a shareholder. Even Aishwarya’s father, mother and brother were enlisted as Amic directors. The company was dissolved in 2008.

AMITABH BACHCHAN:

As per the leaked papers, Amitabh Bachchan was a director of four shipping companies established in the British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas.“The authorised capital of these firms ranged from $5,000 to $50,000, but they traded in ships worth millions ” the report said.

AJAY DEVGN:

Ajay Devgn's name appeared in the list as the largest shareholder of Marylebone Entertainment Ltd situated in the British Virginia Islands. As of 29th October, 2013, the company's actual shareholder was Hassan N Sayani.

The actor allegedly purchased the complete shareholding on the same day and later said that the firm was lawfully set-up in line with RBI guidelines.

KP SINGH:

India’s biggest real estate developer, KP Singh, reportedly got a company enlisted in the British Virgin Islands in 2010, along with his wife.

According to a report by the Indian Express, “At least two more companies were set up in 2012 by son Rajiv Singh and daughter Pia Singh. The family’s three offshore entities together hold almost $10 million’’.

SAMEER GEHLAUT:

The proprietor of a real estate company known as Indiabulls purchased three properties in London by dint of family companies enlisted in Karnal, Delhi, Bahamas, Jersey and the UK. The deals draws in a convoluted network of firms leading to the SG Family Trust owned by Sumita Singh, Haryana Mahila Congress chief, and her spouse Jagdeep Singh Virk.

Others mentioned in the Panama Papers leak case are Shiv Vikram Khemka, SUN group patriarch Nand Lal Khemka's son, Jehangir Sorabjee, son of former attorney general Soli Sorabjee, Anurag Kejriwal, former Delhi Lok Satta Party leader, Navin Mehra of Mehrasons Jewellers, Hajra Iqbal Memon, underworld don Iqbal Mirchi’s wife.
