In a huge setback for Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the party has been been banned from contesting civic elections in Maharashtra.
The state election commission, which made this announcement on 13 July, said that the party's registration has been cancelled.
ANI reported that the decision was taken as the party failed to provide details for its income and funds. The party was planning to contest its maiden election in Pune in November.
Last year the party had made some inroads in Maharashtra civic elections by winning four seats in the Kalyan Dombivali municipal (KDMC) elections.
