From being the most criticised doll on the planet for the insufferable body image it was propagating, to the internet's favourite doll again. Barbie has risen from the ashes of near-irrelevance.
Earlier this year, Mattel announced a 'healthier' version of Barbie, a curvier version if you will, sending happy waves across the world. After years of condemning the impossibly figured Barbie, a new range of dolls without an unrealistic slim waist sounded like a pretty cool idea to everyone.
So when Nigerian medical student, and fashion blogger, Haneefah Adam redressed the dolls in hijabs and abayas, it was bound to make news. Inclusion of cultures is something Mattel still hasn't gotten down to pat. For a doll that has ruled the toy markets since 1959, it was high-time someone went ahead and gave Barbie a makeover.
The idea of the getting Barbie to dress up in abayas and hijabs struck Adam when she was studying in the UK and couldn't find a racially diverse doll in the market. After moving back to Nigeria, she bought a Barbie, dressed her up, started an Instagram account for 'Hijarbie' and the rest as they say is history.
