Amarinder Singh becomes Congress' president of Punjab unit

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 13 February 2017, 10:41 IST

Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has taken the reigns of the state Congress following the resignation of Pratap Singh Bajwa and state CLP leader Sunil Jakhar on 26 November.

Assembly elections in Punjab are scheduled for 2017. Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has held a series of consultations in the past few months on how to push the party in the state where its prospects appear to be bright.

Last week, Rahul Gandhi led a delegation of party leaders from Punjab, along with Amarinder Singh, to President Pranab Mukherjee to project unity in the state.

In the last assembly polls, Congress has projected Amarinder as the chief ministerial candidate. The party lost the polls, and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) later put the blame on Amarinder's overconfidence.
