SC issues contempt notice to Markandey Katju over remarks on Soumya case

The Supreme Court, on 11 November, issued a contempt notice to retired judge Markandey Katju over his 'inappropriate' remarks on Facebook over the Soumya murder case.

Justice Katju was appearing as the defence counsel of the Kerala government in the case on 11 November.

The apex court observed that Katju's comments on the Supreme Court verdict exempting the convict Govindachamy from capital punishment put down the court's goodwill.

Later on the court's order, Katju was evicted from the premises. It ordered the security personnel to escort Katju out of the court.

The former judge responded to the comments saying he doesn't bother about it. He also asked whether it was the right way to behave to a retired judge.

In a Facebook post, Katju had alleged that there were flaws in the apex court's judgement on the Soumya rape case and that the accused Govindachamy, who was acquitted of murder charge in the case, should have been given death penalty.
