Gareth Bale scored a hattrick, while French forward Karim Benzema scored a brace, as Zinedine Ziddane began life as the manager of Real Madrid with a thumping 5-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna in La Liga on Saturday, 9 January.

Playing their first game since the sacking of Rafa Benitez, Real Madrid took the lead in the 15th minute through Benzema, who tapped in from close range. Seven minutes later, Gareth Bale headed in the club's second goal.

Bale scored his second early on in the second half with a slick left-footed finish. He completed his hattrick at the hour mark with another header.

To compound Deportivo's misery, Benzema added a fifth goal for Real in the 90th minute with a right-footed close range finish. With the win, Real moved to within two points of league leaders Barcelona, who have a game in hand.
