After Rohith Vemula suicide, HRD ministry hurries to clear fellowship dues

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 14 February 2017, 5:33 IST

HRD Minister Smriti Irani has asked the University Grants Commission, the All India Council of Technical Education and the ministry of finance to look into the matter of the Rs 1,100 crore students' fellowship dues, reports the Hindustan Times. The money is owed to more than 85,000 scholars.

Students have been complaining that they have yet to receive their money, though fellowship dues were raised in December 2014. The money, meant to help students with their expenses and research, was not disbursed due to a budget crisis in the ministry.

Though students have been complaining for months, Irani acted just two days ago, after the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula.
