Meme fest erupts on Twitter as air quality in Delhi reaches severe category after Diwali

The bursting of crackers during Diwali, combined with pollutants from stubble burning in adjacent states, led to the air quality go to rack and ruin in Delhi and surrounding levels. Although the pollution level remained lower than the last three years.

In Delhi, Kolkata, Chandigarh and Punjab air quality levels varied between poor and severe categories on Monday and Tuesday.

While people in Delhi and its adjacent states battled to breath, #smog and #delhismog have been trending on social media and is the footing for numerous memes. From criticising the ban of crackers to seeking clean air, Twitter was flooded with smog related funniness.

A Centre for Science and Environment report suggest that fireworks on Diwali night played an integral part in the rapid deterioration of air quality in Delhi-NCR.

Authorities in the national capital have been urged to take several steps, including sprinkling of water to curb dust, diesel genset ban and a ban on open burning to curb emissions. The situation is set to comparatively become better by Friday. Officials stated that an increase in wind speed in the upper atmosphere is expected by the end of this week, which will help lower the Air Quality Index.
