With a 10% increase in monthly retainers (salary) and a bonus for winning test series against any full member national team, Pakistan senior batsman Mohammad Hafeez has been paid the highest fee by the Pakistan Cricket Board for the year 2015-2016. He took home a whopping 39 million rupees or Rs 2.49 crore (INR). By contrast, India's Test captain Virat Kohli earns around Rs 308 crore annually from fees and endorsements.

According to reports, documents sent by the PCB to the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Co-ordination for the fiscal year 2015-16 shows that 40 cricketers were paid around Rs 550 million as fees and bonuses for all formats of the game.

In contrast, flamboyant all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who now represents Pakistan in just the T20 format, earned approximately Rs 18 million. The documents confirm that the PCB is also heavily subsidising domestic cricket.

The list of the top earning players includes national One Day captain Azhar Ali - 30 million rupees, Younis Khan - 24 million, Misbah-ul Haq - 24 million, Ahmed Shehzad - 8 million, Wahab Riaz - 29 million, Shoaib Malik - 26 million.

Some of these players have faced problems with the federal taxation and revenue officials over not disclosing their full earnings or non-payment of wealth taxes.

The PCB has been increasing the players' fees and monthly central contract retainers since the last two years.

How does the payment work

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2015-2016 announced its new central contracts. There would be a 10% increase in monthly retainers (salary) and a bonus for winning test series against any full member nation. Apart from central contracts and fees, the earnings would depend on the category the players find themselves in.

Twenty-seven players including Shoaib Malik, Azhar Ali, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, and Younis Khan are the only names in category A.

The categories are divided in the following way:

Category A: The most lucrative category - would have the player with most experience and consistent performances.

Category B: PCB included 9 players, where Rs 345,000 will be the monthly salary plus match fee and win bonuses.

Category C: Some of the inconsistent players makes the list, where Rs 198,000 will be paid plus match fee and the win bonuses.

Category D: PCB included players who might not be the first choice picks in any of the international formats but have played in the recent past or emerging young talent - Rs 100,000

Individual Bonus includes scoring a hundred, double hundred or taking 5 wickets in an innings or 10 wickets in a test match.
