Budget airline SpiceJet loses tyre immediately after take-off with 211 on board

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 14 February 2017, 5:51 IST

SpiceJet flight SG517 flying from Bangalore to Kolkata lost one of its back tyres immediately post take off. The flight had 204 passengers and seven crew members on board when the incident took place.

Fortunately, the 'tyre drop' was noticed well in time by the staff at Bangalore airport who spotted the debris on the runway. They staff immediately got in touch with Air Traffic Control (ATC), who in turn informed the pilot about the incident before he landed at Kolkata. As the tyre in question was at the rear-end (the rear has two tyres on each side), the pilot managed to land without any mishaps.

According to a report in The Times of India, a SpiceJet spokesman confirmed the news: "One of the rear tyres fell off or burst while our aircraft was taking off from Bengaluru. The pilot landed the aircraft safely at the destination and all passengers have disembarked safely."

A probe has been ordered by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation chief M Sathiyavathy to find out what exactly went wrong.
