Palakkad district of Kerala will soon be declared as the first ever HIV/AIDS literate district in the country. This has been made possible by the efforts of district panchayat and an organisation KESS-HAPPI.

TN Kandamuthan, the president of district panchayat of Palakkad told media that a project was undertaken for nine months to educate the people about AIDS and to remove any doubts and stigmas in their minds related to the disease and the victims.

The project was named as Jyothirgamaya and was implemented with the help of 91 gram panchayats and four municipalities.

Anganwadi, Asha and Kudumbasree workers distributed pamphlets, organised workshops, rallies and quiz contests to spread awareness. Efforts were also made at informing people about protecting and bringing the victims to the mainstream.
