Donald Trump's Super Tuesday speech may be his strangest one yet

Blassy Boben | Updated on: 10 February 2017, 1:51 IST

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump won big in the Super Tuesday fight - bagging seven states. Trump won in Virginia, Arkansas, Alabama, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont and Georgia. (Alaska is yet to be determined)

Trump addressed his supporters at his private club, Mar-a-Lago, at his Palm Beach residence after the results for the first five states were announced. In what appeared to a rather toned-down version of the brash speeches he is known to deliver, Trump said he was the one who would unify the Republican party. He also took on Hillary Clinton, slammed Marco Rubio and reiterated his promises to "make America great again".

He addressed issues facing the country with an unusually serious tone. He also seemed to be choosing his words carefully. Almost as if he just realised what it really took to be the President of the United States. Don't believe us? Sample some of his lines from the Super Tuesday speech:

"People in the middle-income groups are making less money than they were 12 years ago... In Hillary Clinton's speech, she said 'they're making less money.' Well, she's been there with Obama for a long period of time. Why hasn't she done anything about it?"

"We've forgotten the middle class in the process of making the country one that we love. This includes lowering taxes".

"We have expanded the Republican Party. I am a unifier. Our party is expanding, and all you have to do is take a look at the primary states where I've won. . I think we're going to be more inclusive. I think we're going to be more unified.

"Republicans have tremendous energy. The democrats don't have that to offer... We have a very dynamic party."

On Hillary Clinton

He took on Hillary Clinton - who just an hour ago - had mocked his Make America Great Again campaign.

"Why has Hillary done nothing about the economy? She's been here for a long time with Obama. Her record as Secretary of State is abysmal. Look at Syria, everything else. It is a disaster".

"She's been there for so long; if she hasn't straightened it out by now, she's not going to straighten it out in the next four years."

"If she's allowed to run, honestly it'll be a sad day for this country because what she did was wrong.. Other people have done far less than her and they have paid a very, very big price." (on the Clinton email server row)

On his opponents

He urged Marco Rubio - who he called a lightweight'- to drop out, and acknowledged Cruz as a contender.

"I've always liked Marco until about a week ago when he decided to go hostile. He decided to go Don Rickles. But Don Rickles has a lot more talent. It's hurt him . He had a bad night. At least you can say that Ted has won something. You got to be able to win. He's all talk."

There was some of the Trump we know in there.

"I'm watching CNBC, I'm watching Fox. See, Im becoming diplomatic".

"Ive already won five states. I could win nine. I win all these states and I come in at second place in the states where I dont win. I think if someone is doing as well as I'm doing and if this was winner takes all - then this is all over".

"If Trump gets 25% of African American votes, then this election is over".

On migrants"Look at Germany, look at Sweden. Its a disaster. We have no idea who they are. We dont know where they come from. They have no paperwork".

They (migrants) are young, they're strong, they're powerful. You look at them and think, why aren't they fighting for their country?"

On world politics

"You're going to be very proud of me as president," Trump said. "I'm going to get along very well with the world". "We're going to make our military bigger and stronger than ever and nobody is going to mess with us".

  • On the Trans-Pacific Partnership

"TPP is a disaster because they don't talk about monetary manipulation and devaluation. They don't talk about it".

"The NAFTA agreements and trade agreements that we have generally will be fully renegotiated by me. We have right now a deficit with Mexico, a trade deficit of US$ 58 billion. We have a US$ 500 billion deficit with China. You can't have this. We will renegotiate".

He said that American countries could not compete with countries who were devaluating their currencies.
  • On Israel:
"Well, first of all, I don't think they do under President Obama because I think he's treated Israel horribly, all right?"

It doesn't help if I start saying, 'I am very pro-Israel, very pro, more than anybody on this stage.' But it doesn't do any good to start demeaning the neighbors... With that being said, I am totally pro-Israel."

  • On Syria:

"We're going to build a safe zone, and it's going to be in Syria. We're gonna get the Gulf states - and they've got more money than anybody.. We're gonna loosen up their wallets a little."

  • On Mexico:
"You look at countries like Mexico where they're destroying us on the border in terms of economic development and companies moving to Mexico. We're losing millions of jobs, thousands of manufacturing plants. We are losing so much and we cant let it happen. We need to stop it. I know how".

"I don't mind trade wars when we're losing $58 billion a year, you want to know the truth... "We're losing so much with Mexico and China.. And then people say, 'Don't we want to trade?' I don't mind trading, but I don't want to lose $500 billion. I don't want to lose $58 billion."

  • On China:

"I have nothing against China but their leaders are too smart for us. China has been one of the great thefts of all time, what they've done to the United States. We can't let China continue to get away with what they're doing to our country,"
