Youth killed in fresh clashes in south Kashmir, death toll rises to 73

As the situation remains tense in the Valley, a youth was killed today in fresh clashes between protesters and security forces in Anantnag district. The death toll in the ongoing unrest has now climbed to to 73 and normal life remains disrupted for the 60th consecutive day.

Naseer Ahmad Mir was killed during the security forces' action to chase away a large number of protesters in south Kashmir, even as several others, including a woman, sustained injuries, a police official said.

According to a PTI report, the injured woman has been referred to a hospital and is in a critical condition. On the night of 5 September, a youth, injured during similar clashes in Sopore area on 4 September, succumbed in a hospital.

Musaib Nagoo was injured during clashes between protesters and security forces on 4 September in Sopore.

The situation has been tense in the Valley after the encounter of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in July.

The separatists, who are spearheading the ongoing agitation, have extended the shutdown programme till 8 September. As part of their weekly protest programme, they have called for peaceful protests by women today, while announcing a 12-hour relaxation in the strike from 6 pm.
