Unnao rape case: Victim's family harassed, culprits have BJP connection, alleges Priyanka Gandhi

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who earlier on Saturday visited the Unnao rape victim's family has alleged that the whole family of the victim has been constantly harassed since last year.

"I have heard that the culprits have some BJP connection. That is why they were being shielded. There is no fear among criminals in the state," Priyanka Gandhi told to reporters after meeting the victim's family.


The Congress leader also hit out at the UP CM Yogi Adityanath and said, "The CM says there is no place for criminals in the state but what he has turned the state into, I think there is no place for women here."

 

"Priyanka Gandhi said that she will fight for justice along with us," said the victim's sister-in-law.

"Our only demand is that the culprits should be given the death penalty, only then her soul will rest in peace," she added.

Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, Sunil Guptaconformed that the victim died to extensive burn injuries.


"No indication of poisoning & suffocation was found on the body during post-mortem. Autopsy reveals that the victim died to extensive burn injuries. The autopsy was conducted in the morning," Gupta said.

 On the other hand, BSP supremo and former CM Mayawati also lashed out at the Aditanath-led government, just hours after the Unnao rape victim succumbed to her burn injuries at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

She alleged that the govt has failed to provide safety to women.

"From the past few years and especially under current BJP government women are not safe. In UP, not a single day goes by without a case of crime against women," she said while speaking to a news agency in Lucknow.

She also urged all the state governments to take time-bound actions against those found guilty.

After battling for life at Delhi's Safdarjung hospital, the Unnao Rape victim who was set ablaze while on her way to a court hearing on Thursday morning died at 11:40 pm on Friday.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old victim, who set ablaze by five men, was airlifted from Lucknow's SMC government hospital to Safdarjung Hospital.
