Hours after Ministry of issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi over his foreign citizenship status, Congress hits at Prime Minister Narendra Modi government, saying the PM is resorting to a "fake narrative" to divert attention. Rahul Gandhi’s sister and Congress Secretary for east UP also reacted on the notice row calling it ‘rubbish’.

“The whole of India knows that Rahul Gandhi is an Indian. People have seen him being born and grow up in India. Kya bakwaas hai yeh?," said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The notice to Rahul Gandhi over citizenship status was sent after a complaint was filed against him by BJP parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy, who has been alleging that the Congress president is a British citizen for years.

"I am directed to say that this ministry has received a representation from Dr Subramanian Swamy, in which it has been brought out that a company named Backups Limited was registered in the United Kingdom in the year 2003, with address 51 Southgate Street, Winchester, Hampshire SO23 9EH and that you were one of the directors and secretary of the said company," The letter said.

The letter also asks Gandhi to intimate the factual position of his citizenship. "You are requested to intimate the factual position in the matter to this ministry within a fortnight of the receipt of the communication," the letter said.

Reacting to the notice, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the entire world knows Gandhi is an Indian citizen by birth.

Prime Minister Modi has no answer on unemployment, agrarian distress and black money, and that is why he's resorting to "fake narrative" through his government's notices to divert attention, Surjewala told reporters.
