A 23-year-old Congolese national was allegedly beaten to death by a group of men in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj area, late on 20 May, police said.

The victim, identified as MT Olivia, was a resident of Delhi's South Extension area. The 23-year-old used to reportedly teach foreign languages at a private institute in Delhi.

The incident took place around 11:45 pm when Olivia got into a heated argument with a group of men in Kishangarh in Vasant Kunj. Following the argument, the group attacked Olivia and chased him for about 20-25 metres before he was attacked with stones.

Another group of locals rescued Olivia and informed the police. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The locals, however, could not identify the perpetrators or say what had led to the incident.

"A case of murder has been registered. We are checking CCTV footage to identify the accused," additional deputy commissioner of police (South), Nupur Prasad said.

The police is investigating the case from all angles including robbery and racism-related hate crime.

The Embassy of Congo has been informed of the incident.

The incident comes just months after a Tanzanian woman was allegedly stripped and beaten on the streets in Bengaluru after a road accident. The Karnataka government had suspended six police officers including a senior official in connection with the alleged assault.
