Lucknow's Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University (BBAU) has banned non-vegetarian food in its mess, officials announced on 3 May.
The move came after tension prevailed in the university following Dalit activist Kancha Illaiah's statement that eating beef was beneficial for health.
Following the varsity's decision, about 200 students took out a protest march to demand restarting of the serving of non-veg food at the mess, terming the decision to ban it as anti-Dalit.
Congress leader Dwijendra Tripathi billed the move as anti-democratic and questioned the authority of the university to decide what students should eat.
