The encounter of 8 undertrial activists of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) in the outskirts of Bhopal has kicked up a political storm.

The 8 SIMI cadres are said to have escaped from Bhopal Central Jail early on Monday morning after allegedly killing a police constable.

They were gunned down on Monday in Eintkedi near Bhopal but Opposition parties have raised questions over the encounter.

A video released by various media outfits showed policemen firing at terrorists who were already dead and abusing them.

The video also showed a dagger-like weapon being recovered from the bodies of one of the deceased. The authenticity of the video is yet to confirmed.

Opposition parties have raised questions over the encounter. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded a Supreme Court monitored probe.

Senior journalist Vinod Kapri said that the entire affair seemed suspicous.

Sushant Singh of Indian Express

questioned media coverage of the incident, stressing that they were undertrials, not terrorists.

What made matters worse for the Madhya Pradesh government, was the home minister's statement that the police had no choice but to kill the terrorists as they weren't carrying a gun. He also told the media that they were armed with utensils.

Meanwhile Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan came out strongly in defence of the encounter.
