Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan is ruled out from the ongoing World Cup in England and Wales. Shikhar Dhawan fractured his thumb during India’s match against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the news officially and confirmed that Rishabh Pant will replace the left-handed batsman.

Team India Manager Sunil Subramaniam in a press conference said, “Shikhar Dhawan has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid-July which rules him out of ICC World Cup. We have requested Rishab Pant as the replacement.”

Shikhar Dhawan announced the news to his fans and followers on social media with an emotional video message. Dhawan posted the video on his official Twitter handle and captioned it, “I feel emotional to announce that I will no longer be a part of #CWC19. Unfortunately, the thumb won’t recover on time. But the show must go on.. I'm grateful for all the love & support from my teammates, cricket lovers & our entire nation. Jai Hind!”

Dhawan injured his thumb when Nathan Coulter-Nile of Australia bowled him a short ball which hit his gloves. Dhawan went on to score a century in the match with an injured thumb and also won the man of the match award. Team India will play against Afghanistan on June 22 in Southampton and will look to continue their winning streak in World Cup 2019.
