Gold: Akshay Kumar as Hockey legend Balbir Singh in his first ever biopic!

Akshay Kumar teamed up with Excel Entertainment for the first time in his career for Reema Kagti's Gold.

The actor booked the Independence Day 2018 slot for release of the film which chronicles the journey of Independent India's first ever gold medal win at the Olympics. With hockey at its core, in the film Akshay Kumar will essay the character of legendary player, Balbir Singh who played a pivotal role in India's Olympic win.

Gold is a tribute to the unsung hero of the Indian Hockey team. Balbir scored a hat-trick of gold against Argentina in the 1948 Olympics. In the finals too, he scored two out of the four goals that India scored.

In the 1952 Olympics, Balbir scored nine out of the 12 goals by the Indian team in the entire event. Another historic achievement by the legend includes five goals scored by him in the opening match of the 1956 Olympics against Afghanistan. The team lead by him won Gold at the 1956 Olympics.

India has won a gold medal in each of the three Olympics: 1948, 1952 and 1956 wherein Singh was a part of the team.

The movie will chronicle the journey of Balbir Singh and his contribution to Indian hockey. Directed by Reema Kagti, Gold will on floors in the second half of 2017. The film will be first-ever biopic for Akshay Kumar.
