A Russian soldier fighting in Ukraine wrote to his mother before losing his life in the war, ‘‘Mom I'm in Ukraine. There is a real war raging here. I am afraid. We are bombing all of the cities, together. Even targeting civilians,"

During an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Ukraine's Ambassador to the UN read out these messages purportedly sent by a Russian soldier in Ukraine to his mother.

In the message, the Russian soldier's mother asks her son why it has been so long since he last responded and if she can send him a parcel. He responds that he's in Ukraine and "wants to hang himself".

"We were told that they [Ukrainians] would welcome us but they are falling under our armoured vehicles, throwing themselves under the wheels and not allowing us to pass. They call us fascists. Mama, this is so hard," the Russian soldier wrote.

Reading out the soldier’s messages, Ukraine's Ambassador to the UN asked the assembly to "visualise the magnitude of the tragedy" going on in Ukraine after Russia attack on February 24.

"Imagine next to you, next to every nameplate of every single country in this general assembly, more than 30 souls of killed Russian soldiers already. Next to every name of every single country," Ukraine's Ambassador added.

According to Ukraine, over 4,500 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war thus far.
