One horrifying incident has been reported at the University of Melbourne, where two international students became the victim of a racist attack by two strangers on Wednesday.

According to the Victoria Police, the two international students were from China, who was walking in the vicinity of Elizabeth St in Melbourne's CBD, at about 5.30 pm on Wednesday, when they were allegedly assaulted, 7news.com.au reported.

The video of the incident has also gone viral on social media platforms.

In the video, the attackers can be seen kicking and punching the students before onlookers came to rescue the two students.

According to an Australian media portal, the victims sustained some minor injuries and the case has been reported to the police, who are now trying to nab the attackers.

The appalling incident has caught the attention of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp who said she was ‘appalled’ by the disgraceful attack.

"During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to stick together and lend a hand to those who need it."

Taking the video to Twitter, she wrote, “I am appalled by the disgraceful attack on two young students from the @unimelb this week in the CBD.”

After this attack, the University of Melbourne’s Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell responded and called the attack was ‘disgusting’ and ‘unprovoked’.

“There is no place for violence in a modern, future-facing society like Australia,” he said in a statement.

He continued, “These senseless and vicious attacks on two young women must never be tolerated in our community.”

“The people who did this are a disgrace,” University VC said.

Maskell said the university is assisting the victim students.

Meanwhile, Police are investigating the matter.
