World no 1 Novak Djokovic began his Australian Open title defence in Melbourne on Monday, 18 January, with a comfortable win in straight sets over South Korea's Chung Hyeon.

Djokovic, who is coming into the tournament on the back of an imperious run of form, won the match 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, as Hyeon failed to put up a challenge. The match lasted for nearly 2 hours.

On the other hand, Serena Williams, had a tougher first round match than Djokovic on Monday morning, as Italy's Camila Giorgi managed to give Serena a run for her money.

However, the 21-time major champion kept her composure and won the game in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. She will next face the winner of the match between Hsieh Su-Wei or Jelena Ostapenko.

Meanwhile, Yuki Bhambri went down tamely to sixth-seed Tomas Berdych, as the Indian challenge in the singles section came to an end. Berdych won 7-5, 6-1, 6-2.
