Sunni outfit wants ban on Majidi film 'Muhammad'

A Mumbai-based Sunni organisation has approached Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and the Iranian Consulate for a ban on the movie Muhammad: Messenger of God, directed by Majid Majidi.

Crafted by the renowned director, the film is the first of a trilogy on the life of prophet Muhammad and depicts his journey from childhood till he becomes a prophet.

The outfit, Raza Academy, has termed the film blasphemous and in a memorandum sent to Rajnath Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, it has also sought "legal action" against A R Rahman, who has composed the music, for hurting the sentiments of Indian Muslims.

The film has been released in Iran till now and awaits release in other parts of the world.

It is an insult to Muhammad: Raza Academy

The organisation is demanding action against the filmmakers. Mohammed Saeed Noori, founder secretary of Raza Academy, has specified some reasons in the memorandum. They are:

1) The name of the prophet shouldn't be in the film's title. People use a film's name loosely, so when someone says negative things about the film, it sounds like an insult to Muhammad himself.

2) Photography isn't allowed in Islam. We have a problem with various actors shown playing Muhammad.
