Former Delhi Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit has reportedly turned down the offer to be projected as the Sonia Gandhi-led party's chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.

The Assembly polls are scheduled to be held early next year in Uttar Pradesh, which is currently ruled by the Samajwadi Party government.

An NDTV report quoted sources as saying that the three-time Delhi CM told the Congress that she does not want to be the party's face for the UP polls. The idea to project Dikshit as the CM face of the party was the brainchild of the Congress' poll strategist for the UP assembly polls 2017, Prashant Kishor.

Kishor had proposed that the candidate be a Brahmin face, a criteria that Dikhsit fulfilled.

Dikshit has met party chief Sonia Gandhi to discuss the strategy for polls in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. However, she refused to make any comment after the meeting.

The 78-year-old leader may also head the poll campaign in Punjab is not goes for the Uttar Pradesh option, sources said.
