Schools in Nainital, Pauri, other districts to be shut for two days as rain lashes Uttarakhand

News Agencies | Updated on: 18 July 2016, 9:48 IST

Schools in Pauri, Almora, Nainital, Tehri, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi districts will remain closed on 18 and 19 July.

However, only primary classes (up to Class 5) will remain shut in schools in Udham Singh Nagar.

The move comes after reports that the Ganga is flowing above the danger mark in Haridwar and Pindar.

At least nine people have died in the state due to incessant rains so far.

On 17 July, Chief Minister Harish Rawat assured the people of the state safety and said that his government is taking all necessary precautions to tackle any untoward incident.

Rawat told ANI, "The water level in river Ganga is increasing. And the same is happening with other rivers as well. We are alert and totally vigilant."

"The administration is fully geared up to tackle any situation. I would like to give my assurance to the people of the state and the country that we are taking all precautions to safeguard the lives of people," he added.

Incessant rainfall has also disrupted electricity and drinking water supply at many places across the state.
