Residents of Nagpur held a protest on March 5th over the issue of a lack of public toilets in the city. Women protesters, under the aegis of Nagpur Citizens Forum, urged the state government to install more public toilets at crowded locations such as markets, mandis etc.

The protesters also displayed placards to draw the government’s attention.

According to women's activist Smita Singhakar, the condition of the public toilets installed in the marketplaces is very poor. They are not cleaned regularly, which creates hygiene issues if somebody wants to use them.

She stated that due to the lack of hygiene in public toilets and their limited numbers, women go to malls, restaurants, and hospitals to use their washrooms.

“The conditions of washrooms in the marketplace are very bad. It's problem for women in terms of safety & hygiene. We have to request malls, hospitals, restaurants & colleges to grant us permission to use washrooms nearby,” Singhakar said.
