Ex Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan detained for protesting in front of Indore Collectorate

Speed News Desk | Updated on: 24 January 2020, 18:29 IST

Former Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and Madhya Pradesh BJP president Rakesh Singh were among several opposition leaders held on Friday for demonstrating in front of the Indore Collectorate in resistance of ristrictions on large congregation.

The BJP leaders were demonstrating against the Kamal Nath led Congress government, which they have accused of oppressing party colleagues as part of its campaign against land mafia in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Police deemed their protest in front of the Indore Collectorate as a contravention of Section 144 of CrPC, which limits the gathering of three or more people in a certain area.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath had launched "Operation Clean", a campaign against the land mafia in the state, last December. Several illegal structures in Indore have already been bulldozed in this connection so far.
