A close aide of Ram Vriksha Yadav, the cult leader whose supporters had encroached upon Jawahar Bagh in Mathura leading to clashes, died in the district hospital, police said late last night.

"Ram Bharose, resident of Kanpur Dehat, lodged in Mathura Jail on 4 June developed congestion in his chest. He was admitted in the jail hospital but on the advise of doctors he was shifted to district hospital where he breathed his last," Jail Superintendent PD Salonia said.

His family members have been informed and his body has been sent for postmortem, he added.

Ram Bharose had been assaulted by a crowd outside Jawahar Bagh following which he was admitted to the district hospital and was later shifted to Mathura Jail on 4 June.

He was booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and his involvement was suspected in the killing of SP City Mukul Dwivedi, police said.
