A man with a criminal history and a Rs 50,000 bounty on his head was taken into police custody from Meerut for murdering a lawyer in Noida.

As maintained by cops, the accused, identified as Sandeep Pilwan, allegedly killed his cousin Nishant Pilwan, an advocate, ten days back. Sandeep was taken into police custody during a joint operation by the Meerut Special Task Force, Agra Unit, and Noida police on Wednesday.

The deceased lawyer had gone to pay a visit to a relative in Ilahabas area last Monday to extend his condolences. While on his way back home, Nishant was shot at by a bike-borne assailant and was later declared dead on arrival by doctors when taken to a hospital. A police compliant was registered at Phase 2 Police Station by the victim’s father.

The CCTV recording was scrutinised and the suspect was spotted, along with a car used in the crime.

The accused told the police that he had a dispute with Nishant over a property. According to officials, Sandeep sold a part of the disputed land to someone else after which Nishant warned him of legal consequences. This induced Sandeep to hatch a murder plan, the police said.

A massive protest was carried out by the Bar Assocation and locals of Sector 86 alleging lack of safety in the area. The accused was taken to Sector 86 in order to recover the murder weapon after his arrest. In the process, the accused tried to escape by snatching a policeman’s gun and was injured when the cops returned fire.
