Prof David R Syiemlieh to be new UPSC Chairman

The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, has appointed Professor David R. Syiemlieh, to perform the duties of Chairman, Union Public Service Commission, from the forenoon of 4 January, 2017, till further orders or till completion of his term as member on 21 January, 2018, whichever is earlier.

He is currently, a member of the Union Public Service Commission.

Sixty-three-year old Syiemlieh is from Meghalaya. Syiemlieh completed his schooling at Dr Graham's Homes, Kalimpong, and graduated in history honours from St.Edmund's College, Shillong. Post this, he pursued a master's degree in History, Mphil and PhD from the North Eastern Hill University, Shillong.

He is the held the positions of Vice Chancellor at North Eastern Hill University and Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh.

He recieved the Charles Wallace Grant for research in the UK, Senior Fulbright Fellowship for research in the US and India France Cultural Exchange for research in Paris. He's also authored several books.
