Shahid Kapoor got his first solo blockbuster with Kabir Singh and the film collected mammoth of around 270 crores. The film also made its place in the top 10 highest-grossing Bollywood film of all-time. Though Kabir Singh had a great collection report in its favour, but the criticism controversies.

Most of the critics criticized Shahid Kapoor's character and called it was a misogynist and director Sandeep Reddy Vanga also received trolling over glorifying his sexist protagonist. Especially one scene where Kabir Singh Slaps Preity (Kiara Advani) in the film really didn't go well with the audience.

However, Shahid has a different approach to his character in the film. Recently, he reached to India Today Conclave Mumbai 2019 and expressed what he felt about the criticism and character.

He said, " We promo-ed the film for two months. If someone's bought a ticket, they probably wanted to see something in it. The film is about a flawed character. Preity (Kiara Advani) is a stronger character than Kabir. Kabir doesn't know how to handle himself. Every Kabir needs a Preity in his life. No one brought up Baazigar, when SRK kills Shilpa Shetty. No one said anything about putting a commode seat on Sonam Kapoor's neck in Sanju. Sab Kabir Singh ke peeche kyun pade hain?"
