The trailer of Tamasha hints that the film is a beautiful story of reinvention. During an interview, on being asked to speak about the inspiration behind Tamasha, Imtiaz Ali said,

"It is an extremely old thought that people behave differently in different places. They act so to be suitable to the society but their inner self is something else. So I used to have this feeling as a kid and ultimately I decided to make this film after Rockstar."

On being asked if directing films helps him rediscover himself, Imtiaz replied,

"It is true that I look at a film of mine and I discover something not just about the world but also about myself. I get answers from my own films after making them."

Imtiaz Ali, who has directed a breezy romantic comedy like Jab We Met and an intense drama like Rockstar, feels that Tamasha is coming together of two films,

"Sometimes I feel Tamasha is a cross between Rockstar and Jab We Met because there is intensity in the film but there is also fun and humour. Tamasha is like the spectacle that life is; it has many emotions like intensity, humour, and romance.

I feel Tamasha will be coming together of different kind of audiences as people who loved Jab We Met will come for the breeziness and people who liked Rockstar, will come to watch the intensity. Hopefully, fans of both Jab We Met and Rockstar will be satisfied with Tamasha."

The expectations from the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer are sky high considering the fact that the film marks the return of the duo after the very successful Yeh Jaawani Hai Deewani.

Speaking about the expectations, he says,

"The expectation around Tamasha has inspired me to work better. So I don't mind people expecting a good film from me. A film like Jab We Met was not an instant hit and people started liking it later on.

After watching Jab We Met, people discovered an unknown film like Socha Na Tha and after watching Socha Na Tha, people found it better than Jab We Met. A film is a permanent commodity and I hope my movies outlive my life."

There are reports that Imtiaz is keen to work with Shah Rukh Khan and has even discussed a few ideas with the superstar. Speaking about the possibility of working with King Khan, he revealed,

"I have plans to do a million movies but nothing is confirmed. I have many plans, lots of desire and would love to work with Shah Rukh Khan. I have discussed so many things with SRK as we both are from Delhi and our friendship goes beyond films."

Box Office numbers have become pretty important in today's time and as a director who loves to mount his films on a huge scale, Imtiaz Ali explains,

"I do keep a tab on Box-Office numbers. The main intent to make a film is to ensure that the money invested in the film by the investors is recovered. Recovery is important and I am not interested in how big a number it is. As far as economies are concerned, I want the producers to believe that the film is worth the budget."

Tamasha released on 27 November 2015.
