India's official entry to Oscars in the best foreign category is Chaitanya Tamhane's Court. The decision was taken unanimously by a 16-member jury headed by veteran actor and filmmaker Amol Palekar.
Court has been chosen to represent India in the Oscars, beating 30 films including PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Masaan, Haider, Kaakaa Muttai amongst others.
The film depicts an Indian courtroom drama and examines the Indian legal system through the trial of an ageing folk singer. The film has won many coveted awards since it premiered at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, including the 62nd National Award for Best Feature Film and two awards at the Singapore International Film Festival amongst others.
Reviewing the film, The Hollywood Reporter said:
Watch the trailer of the film here:"Mumbai's Chaitanya Tamhane emerges as one of the world's most accomplished and promising film-makers under 30 with his quietly steely legal drama Court, a bluntly-titled chronicle of politically-motivated injustice."
