Bappi Lahiri: Lesser-known facts about veteran musician

With a career of over five decades in the movie industry and directing the music of over 600 films, Bappi Lahiri played a massive part in uplifting Indian music and replenishing the disco genre in India. Also known as the 'King of Disco', he was famous across many generations for his dance tracks.

Here are some lesser known facts about the veteran musician:.


The ‘Gold Man’

Everybody knew the veteran musician as the ‘Gold Man’, but that’s not why he wore the jewellery. He believed gold to be his ‘lucky’, his ‘mama’, his ‘Ma Lakshmi’. Every chain or bracelet of his belonged to some god—Ganpati, Balaji, Hare Krishna, Hare Ram, Hanumanji.

‘Jimmy Jimmy’:

His super hit dance number 'Jimmy Jimmy' from Disco Dancer brought Lahiri several accolades internationally. It was also featured in the Hollywood film, You Don't Mess With the Zohan.

Favourite Song:

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Composed by him and sung by Kishore Kumar, the song from the 1976 film, Chalte Chalte brought tears to Bappi Lahiri’s eyes.

Acting Stints:

Bappi Lahiri acted in a lead role for the film It's Rocking: Dard-E-Disco in 2012. He also made guest appearances in many movies like Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi, Om Shanti Om, Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, Nayan Mony.

World Record:

The Disco King’s name is in the Guinness Book of World records for recording over 180 songs for 33 films released during a single year (1986).

Foreign Collaborations:

Bappi Lahiri has collaborated on songs with global music icons Lady Gaga and Akon among others.

International Presence:

Known globally, Michael Jackson had told Bappi Lahiri how much he loved his song Disco Dancer and when Elton John needed someone to dub for his part in Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), he said, “I have a lookalike called Bappi Lahiri who sings like me. Only he will dub my part.”
