In the midst of General Election, the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has spoken for the first time and has taken a dig at the ruling dispensation without naming the party and said that ‘today were being taught the definition of patriotism.’

While mentioning about rights and constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, Sonia Gandhi expressed her concern over the growing regressiveness across the country and added that citizens need to protect their rights.

Regressive forces have systematically dismantled our institutions. The current government has undermined the welfare architecture that was laid down over the last 65 years. We need to reclaim our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and rights and secure the life of dignity and security for our people,” said former Congress president.

Taking a dig at the BJP and the right-wing politics, Sonia Gandhi mentioned the patriotism lectures and certificates being distributed across the country.

Gandhi further said, “Today we are being taught a new definition of patriotism. Those who do not accept diversity are being called patriots. Humse umeed ki ja rahi hai ki khaan paan pehnaave aur abhivyakti ki azaadi ke maamle mein kuch logon ki manmaani hum bardaasht karein.”

Lok Sabha election is scheduled to begin from April 11, which will take place with seven phases across the country. The result is decided to be declared on May 23. Congress party, with the help of regional players and Grand Alliance, is trying to find a ground and win as many seats as possible, the grand old party was brought down to 44 in 2014 polls by the BJP.
