Two days after a man was lynched to death by a mob accusing him of consuming beef in Bisada village in Dadri, the state government announced that the victim's family will be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. Even as samples of the meat stored in the victim's refrigerator was taken for forensic tests, senior police officials reiterated that beef is not banned in Uttar Pradesh.

The area, which falls under the Gautam Budhnagar district, continues to be tense after the incident. The victim, Mohd Ikhlaq's son Danish was also beaten up by the mob on the same night. Six arrests have been made so far and a hunt is on to nab others involved in the incident.

Tense situation

Security has been provided to the family on the directions of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. However, the situation in the neighbourhood remains tense. As rumours of beef consumption spread, violence was reported from a neighbouring village where a big crowd clashed with the police on Tuesday. A large number of police personnel has been deployed there, reports the Economic Times.

Meanwhile, reactions that have come in after the barbaric incident, particularly from BJP leaders, hasn't done much to assuage the situation. Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma was quoted by ET as saying: "This incident was like action and reaction and not because of any organised plan. Misunderstanding was the main reason." Another BJP leader, Vichitra Tomar, has demanded the release of the six youth arrested in the case.
