The row was sparked after an audio clip of the purported 37-minute-long speech by Pillai made the rounds on social media on 4 August. The speech was portrayed as a mix of virulent Islamophobia and religious bigotry directed at Christians, the Hindu reported.

Pillai has alleged that his words have been twisted out of context and he did not mean to offend sentiments of the minority communities.

Meanwhile, Pillai's son, former minister and Kerala Congress (B) MLA KB Ganesh Kumar, has also apologised for the gaffe.
