Almost two years following the murder of a 26-year-old woman, who was found dead at her lover’s house in Kerala, the Kerala police crime branch has cracked the case by taking a 39-year-old man into their custody for allegedly raping and murdering her.

The crime branch took the accused into their custody on Monday, the accused, identified as Naseer, a timber merchant from Kottangal area, for "brutally raping and killing" the woman who was living with her lover after being separated from her husband.

The accused had gone to her lover's house located in the same village in the district for timber dealings on the day of the horrific crime.

As maintained by officials, the case was cracked under the aegis of scientific investigation including matching the DNA of the accused with the evidence collected.

The woman was found hanging in her lover's house on 15th December, 2019. The local police which at first investigated the matter had written off the case saying it was a suicide case.

Later, the case was handed over to the Crime Branch in February 2020 and its scientific probe which included the DNA test determined that the victim was subjected to brutal rape before being hanged by the accused.

In the time of probe, the local police had taken her lover, an auto driver, into their custody on the suspicion that he was the person responsible in the murder.

However, the crime branch investigation revealed that it was Naseer who had committed the gruesome crime while her lover and his father were not present at the house.

Scientific examination revealed the presence of Naseer’s sperm in the woman's genitals and his DNA matched with the evidence taken, officials said.

Furthermore, the probe established that the victim had been subjected to brutal sexual assault and physical abuse before being hanged from the roof, officials said.
