A 20-year-old newlywed woman and his husband were attacked in Hyderabad by her father a week after she got married going against the family’s wish. Father reportedly called her daughter for conciliatory talks but when they reached to meet him, he started attacking them with a machete.

When the couple Madhavi and Sandeep went to meet him in SR Nagar, the father came there and parked his motorcycle. After removing his helmet, he took out a machete from his sling bag to attack them.

He first assaulted Sandeep but he fell to the ground, then he attacked his daughter. Some bystanders tried to rescue her from that but they failed. The assault was captured on a CCTV camera. As Madhavi bled profusely and was not able to react or move and Sandeep got deeply injured, Manoharachary ran away.

Local people brought them to hospital where Madhavi is in serious condition. According to doctors, she has deep injuries in the neck and hand and lost a lot of blood.

“She is in physiological and mental shock. Besides the loss of blood, she could suffer infections too. We have to carefully monitor her condition for the next 24-48 hours,” said the doctor.

Madhavi and Sandeep have known each other over five years while they were studying different colleges in Hyderabad. When they want to marry, Madhavi’s upper caste family opposed to their marriage. So the couple got married in a simple Arya Samaj manner in the presence of their friends.

However, Vijay Kumar, investigating officer, said “They came to our police station after their marriage. The SR Nagar police called the two families and counselled them about the intercaste marriage”.
