A fire broke out on 27 December at a yagna organised by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar.

The incident occurred a few hours before President Pranab Mukherjee was scheduled to arrive at the Ayutha Chandi Maha Yagnam at Rao's farmhouse in Medak. No casualties have been reported.

According to reports, about 2,000 priests were brought to Medak to carry out the yagna which is reportedly being performed for peace.

According to an India Today report, over 60,000 people were present on Sunday, the culmination of the five-day long yagna, when the fire broke out.

Opposition parties have slammed the yagna, claiming it spreads superstition. Opposition leaders have pegged the estimate cost of the yagna at between Rs 7 crore to Rs 20 crore. However, the TDP has claimed that no state funds are being utilised for the private ceremony.
