Team India’s World Cup campaign is derailed after their hard-hitting opener Shikhar Dhawan suffered from a thumb fracture. Shikhar Dhawan scored a brilliant century in India’s second World Cup match against Australia but did not come out to field in the second innings as he suffered from an injury while batting.

It is being speculated that Rishabh Pant could take Dhawan’s place in India’s World Cup squad. Rishabh Pant is also a left-handed explosive batsman and is known for his power hitting. KL Rahul might open the innings with Rohit Sharma and Pant could bat at number four as his fans suggest.

Rishabh Pant is ready to take the flight to England as soon as possible to replace the Delhi batsman in the team. According to the Times of India, the management will place an official request for replacement once the details on Dhawan’s injury are out. The replacement is most likely to be Rishabh Pant.

There are also talks about bringing in Shreyas Iyer, Ambati Rayudu or Ajinkya Rahane in place of Shikhar Dhawan. Ajinkya Rahane is playing county cricket in England and is familiar with the English conditions more. While Ambati Rayudu was kept as a back-up player along with Rishabh Pant so his chances of joining the team is also there.

India won the match against Australia by 36 runs, Shikhar Dhawan was awarded the man of the match for scoring 117 runs. India will play against New Zealand on June 13 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham before meeting their arch-rival Pakistan on June 16.
