Did you know that you almost, just almost had the opportunity to see Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan sharing screen space? No, right? Well you did. In Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti, which starred Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor and Soha Ali Khan.

In the film, among the other major characters, R Madhavan made an extended guest appearance wherein he essayed the character of an Indian Air Force officer. As Ajay Singh Rathod, the actor won over the audience with his charismatic performance.

However, very few know that the said character was initially offered to Shah Rukh Khan.

The superstar loved the script as well as the character, but sadly could not take it up. The biggest reason was that Shah Rukh Khan had prior commitments. The shooting dates of Rang De Basanti were clashing with those of Paheli. So the makers re-worked the schedules, but later that resulted in a clash with the shooting schedule of Don.

Recalling the incident in an interaction with Catch, director Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra said,

"I did give Shah Rukh Khan the script of Rang De Basanti and he was supposed to do the role that eventually went to R Madhavan. He loved the script and he would tell me time and again that 'Rang De Basanti is the only script that I keep on my bed side and make a point to read it at regular interval.' Sadly, it didn't materialise but I thought he was a great choice for that role. I am not saying, Madhavan didn't do justice as every actor brings his own thing on the table. His acting talent and good points made it look convincing."

Had Shah Rukh Khan come on board for the film, it would have been his first on-screen association with Aamir Khan. Till date, the two superstars have never come on board for the same film.
